produce box

hey everyone, i don't really know where the sudden urge to blog constantly is coming from, but i decided to do a little weekly piece about what is in my produce box. i split my produce box with my neighbors, so mind you this is only half of the total box! maybe at some point, i will add pictures, we'll see!
this week's (half) box contains:
1 1/2 heads of leaf lettuce
1 bunch of chard
1 bunch of choi
1 bag of spinach
1 summer squash
1 zucchini
small bunch of savory
small bunch of young white turnips
small bunch of radishes
small bunch of baby onions, both red and white
!3 garlic scapes!! ( i am very excited to cook with these!)

as you can see, it is a lot of produce, i am just today finishing up the last of my last box. i do feel a little restricted and forced to eat this so it doesn't go bad, but i can honestly say that i am probably eating way better than i normally do and i haven't felt much of an urge to go out to eat since i have all of this food! k, check back next week to see what else i get!

good things going on

i am going to help build a community garden tomorrow. recently, with the cooperation of a few groups, namely the Rogers Park Garden Group paired with the remainder of the Saving Sophia Garden group and Chicago Park District, the neighborhood was granted space within one of the small area parks to convert it to a community garden. through an easy application process and lottery system, i was pleased to find out i was awarded a spot. i have been so obsessed lately with immersing my self in a local food culture, between my own gardening endeavors, joining a CSA, scoping out local fruit trees for urban scavenging, and considering getting back into canning/preserving. i am very excited that all of these things were fairly easily accessible, especially the community garden. i think that there is getting to be more of a cultural push to be self sufficient again, which is right up my alley.

so, if you are interested, here is some suggested reading!
